The Green Morning

when the sun set, he crouched by the path and cooked a small supper and listened to the fire crack while he put the food in his mouth and chewed thoughtfully.

해가 떠오를 때 그는 길옆에서 허리를 굽히고 간단한 식사를 준비하고 음식을 입에 넣고 천천히 씹는 순간 축포가 터지는 소리를 들었다.

It had been a day not unlike thirty others, with many neat holes dug in the dawn hours, seeds dropped in, and water brought from the bright canals.

동틀 무렵 종자들이 뿌려지고 은하들로부터 물이 온 잘 정리된 많은 구뎅이들과 함께 다른 30일들과 다르지 않는 하루 였다.

Now, with an iron weariness in his slight body, he lay and watched the sky colour from one darkness to another.

지금 그는 그의 가윈 체질로 지쳐서 누워서 어두운 곳에서 또 다른 곳으로 하늘의 색깔을 보았다.

His name was Benjamin Driscoll Driscoll, and he was thirty-one years old. 그의 이름은 베냐민 드리스콜이고 31살 이였다.

And the thing that he wanted was Mars grown green and tall with trees and foliage, producing air, more air, growing larger with each season; trees to cool the towns in the boiling summer, trees to hold back the winter winds.

그리고 그가 원하는 것은 초록색으로 성장한 화성과 공기를 더많이 생산하는, 무더운 여름에 도시를 식혀주고 겨울을 오게 하는 높고 잎이 무성한 나무 들이다.

There were so many things a tree could do: add colour, provide shade, drop fruit, or become a children's playground, a whole sky universe to climb and hang from; an architecture of food and pleasure, that was a tree.

색을 다채롭게 하고, 그늘을 만들고 과일을 생산하고 혹은 어린이들의 놀이터가 되고 우주로 올라가고 음식을 제조하고 즐기고 하는 많은 것들이 있는데 그것이 바로 나무 였다.

But most of all the trees would distil an icy air for the lungs, and a gentle rustling for the ear when you lay nights in your snowy bed and were gentled to sleep by the sound.

그러나 대부분의 나무들은 호흡을 위하여 찬 공기를 중류하려고 하고 당신이 깨끗한 침대에 누워 있을 때 산들 거리는 소리로 하여 잠들게 하려고 쓰다듬어 준다.

He lay listening to the dark earth gather itself, waiting for the sun, for the rains that hadn't come yet.

그는 어두운 지구가 태양 기다리고 아직 오지 않았던 비를 위하여 속도를 높이는 것을 들으며 누워있었다.

His ear to the ground, he could hear the feet of the years ahead moving at a distance, and he imagined the seeds he had placed today sprouting up with green Mars was an afternoon forest, Mars was a shining orchard.

대지를 향한 그의 귀는 몇 광년 먼 거리의 움직임을 들을 수 있었고 오늘 뿌린 씨들이 과수원을 비추고 있었던 푸른 화성과 함께 움트고 있는 것을 그려보았다.

In the early morning, with the small sun lifting faintly among the folded hills, he would be up and finished with a smoky breakfast in a few minutes and, trodding out the fire ashes, be on his way with knapsacks, testing, digging, placing seed or sprout, tamping lightly, watering, going on, whistling, looking at the clear sky brightening toward a warm noon.

높고 낮은 봉우리들 사이로 작은 태양이 솟아오르는 이른 아침에 얼른 일어나서 아침을 끝내고 재를 털고 수레국화꽃이 핀 길에서 향기를 맡으며 씨를 구뎅이를 파고 씨를 심고 가볍게 다지고 물을 주고 휘파람을 불며 따뜻한 정오로 기울어지는 맑은 하늘을 보려고 하였다.

“You need the air,” he told his night fire. The fire was a ruddy, lively companion that snapped back at you, that slept close by with drowsy pink eyes warm through the chilly night.

“너는 공기가 필요해” 그는 불을 보고 말을 걸었다. 탁탁거리며 너에게로 향한 불은 불그스레 하였고 활기있는 동반자였는데 바로 가까이에서 졸리는 핑크빛눈으로 으스스한 밤하늘을 덥히며 스러져갔다.     From Transitions Pg 151
